Columbus, Georgia

Columbus, Georgia is best known as the home of Fort Benning. The city of Columbus grew up around the Army base and owes much of its success and prosperity to Ft. Benning. This doesn't mean that Columbus hasn't accomplished much on it's own though. Columbus supports many of Georgia's best businesses and happens to be a prime convention destination. The city is also located near many fun tourist activities in the mid-west Georgia region.

Urban Renewal

Columbus, Georgia is one of the best examples of urban renewal in the South. By the 1970s much of city was in ruins due to people moving to places like Atlanta allowing the old neighborhoods to be taken over by crime thus causing more good people to leave the area. By the 1980s a move was made to take back Columbus. So far, this has been largely successful.
